Originally called Ringways Airport, Manchester International Airport is the 3rd busiest airport in the UK, dealing with over 20 million passengers a year from its three terminals. The completion of its second runway in 2001 has led to expectations that passenger numbers will rise to over 40 million by 2015, which would make it the UK's second busiest airport after London Heathrow.

It is the North's most important airport, serving a wide catchment area: over 20 million people live within two hours of Manchester.
