Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Symptoms

Whilst the overwhelming majority of airline passengers do not experience any problems of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), it is essential to be aware of the dangers and to take any symptoms seriously.

A deep vein thrombosis forming in the leg can cause a number of symptoms, including:

  • Tenderness
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Discolouration of the limb

These symptoms are generally more noticeable at the back of the knee. Symptoms may occur a few hours after travelling, or even days later, although many people who develop DVT will experience symptoms during the flight.

However, in some cases, there may not be any symptoms until the pulmonary embolism occurs. Anyone who experiences shortness of breath, chest pain or other similar symptoms within a short time after the flight (or indeed at anytime) should consult a medical professional immediately.
