Dealing with Stress

Avoiding stress when flying can be very difficult, if not almost impossible. However, help is at hand - take a deep breath and follow our tips for a stress-free and relaxed flight:

  1. Plan your journey well in advance to avoid many situations that can contribute to a stressful journey. Make a note of all the details for each stage of your journey, such as:
    • the time of your flight
    • the time you need to check in (this is 2 hours or more prior to the flight time for international departures).
    • the time you need to leave your house
Very few people work out how long each stage of their trip will take, leading to a last minute rush, which can only induce stress.
  2. Always leave plenty of time to complete each stage of your journey. Remember that you will be weighed down with luggage, and that airports are usually large crowded places with a number of stop points (such as check-in and passport control). It is vital that you allow yourself enough time to accommodate these possible delays.
  3. Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water the night before and during the day of flying.
  4. Tiredness can compound stress, so make sure that you get a good night's sleep before your flight.
  5. Get rid of any excess energy by taking a brisk walk on the morning of the flight, and whilst at the airport prior to flying.
  6. When you're waiting at the airport, try to relax your mind by reading a magazine or book, rather than getting preoccupied in any delays or crowds, which may cause nervous energy that is then released as stress.
  7. Take advantage of in-flight entertainment to distract your mind throughout the flight.
  8. Avoid alcohol as this will only disorientate and exhaust you further.
