Final Checklist Before Leaving Home
So, you're all ready to set off on your trip? Well, before you leave home, take a look though the following reminders to make sure you're fully prepared for your holiday:
- Make sure all your bills are paid and up to date.
- Return any library books, rented videos and DVDs.
- Ask a trusted neighbour to come in and collect any post that arrives, or arrange for it to be held at the post office whilst you are away. It will take at least a week to set up this service, so organise well in advance.
- Cancel newspaper, milk and any other deliveries made to your home for the duration of your trip.
- Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbour, and ask them to keep an eye on your house. Give them a copy of your travel plans, and a contact number in case of emergencies.
- Reconfirm your flights and any reservations you have made.
- Set up timed security lights to help keep your home safe.
- Store any valuables in a safe place.
- Turn off your heating. However, if cold weather is forecast while you're away, it may be a good idea to have your central heating come on for a couple of hours each day to prevent pipes freezing and bursting.
- Empty your fridge of all perishable items, and make sure you have taken out the rubbish.
- Unplug and switch off any electrical appliances. This will save energy and minimise the risk of electrical fires.
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for your journey. Thin layers are a good idea, as you can then easily adapt to the different temperatures en route.
- Make a final check to ensure that you have everything you need ... tickets, passport, money ...
- Make sure you leave plenty of time to get to the airport. If you're early you can relax with a coffee or do some shopping before you board your flight.
